Langholm Town Band on Common Riding Day
The Common Riding is an ancient ceremony performed in Langholm every year at the end of July. It dates back to when the borders of the town would be ridden around to check they were unbreached. Nowadays, the day starts with the flute band playing around the town just after dawn. It ends with the Cornet, a specially elected unmarried man of the town serving the lead the ceremonies, handing back the town flag in the market place late in the evening. Highlights of the day include the charge up the Kirk Wynd hill by the Cornet on horseback accompanied by over 100 others on horseback - turf and sometimes horseshoes fly! - and the town band playing around the same route they have down for nearly 200 years. The band is the oldest in Scotland, dating back to just after the battle of Waterloo.

The Meeting of the Waters
This is a view of the "Meeting of the Waters", a popular Langholm beauty spot. The river in the foreground is the Esk and the one in the background is the Ewes. My company is named so because this can be seen from the front door!
