My name is Claire Graham and I currently run Esknet, a website design business in Langholm, Scotland. I graduated from Queen Margaret College in November 1997 with a BA in Communication Studies. Before I did this I studied for a NC and HND from Dumfries and Galloway College and Fife College of Further and Higher Education. The industry standard skills I learnt during this time that I apply to my work now are graphic design, IT, public relations, marketing and DTP.
My time at QMC especially gave me the chance to develop my interest in the internet. I treated it at first as a hobby and after I graduated I certainly didn't realise that I would eventually be using my interests as a full time occupation. I trained in multimedia and website design at Inform in Dumfries after graduation. During my work experience placement I designed a website for Primrose and Gordon Solicitors in Dumfries which was successful. It was a few months after this that I decided to start out by myself. I have recently completed a site for a local artist, Lawrence Fallon, as well as a site for Labhar Bheinn, a B&B on the Isle of Skye. I am also currently working on various local web-based projects for the local Regional Development agency and for a local environmental charity as well as updating existing sites when required. I also maintain the official website for the Scottish personality and singer Donnie Munro . I work with Angie Doyle (admin) and Peter Gibson (merchanise and promotion) to run his Information Service for his fans. I have been doing this for just over a year now and it is a real labour of love! I am at the point in my life now where I would like to work for a company designing websites and expanding the skills I already have. It has been a challenge working for myself and I have learnt a lot, but it is a lonely business and I feel that I would like to contribute my skills as part of a team, hopefully in the Central Belt of Scotland.
When I'm not working, I enjoy keeping up to date with current affairs, both news and IT orientated. I'm an avid reader and I enjoy a wide range of genres from psychology to fiction. I have a keen interest in Scottish history since I believe that to understand the present one has to understand the past. My biggest passion has to be music, both live and recorded. I have recently become a member of Langholm Town Band which is the oldest civilian brass band in Scotland, originating from 1815 and I am learning the tenor trombone. I got married to Glen Laidlaw, who is a self employed delivery driver,in September 1999.
